Pomade is an excellent choice for styling your hair! While hair gels can leave your hair feeling sticky (or worse, hard as a rock!), pomades are designed to give your hair a more natural, touchable hold.
When choosing the perfect pomade for your hair, there are a few variables to consider.
Oil or Water-Based?
Oil-based pomades were the norm for decades. These pomades will give your hair stronger hold and more “shine” than water-based products, and are generally cheaper. The downside? Oil-based pomades are difficult to get out! Water alone won’t do the trick, you’ll want to use a degreasing shampoo. Be aware this can strip your hair of natural oils!
Water-based pomades are the modern trend . While their hold isn’t quite as strong as oil-based pomades; they leave a more natural look and wash out easily with water. Because of this, you can avoid long-term hair damage while looking your best.
Matte or Sheen?
Pomades usually come in one of two varieties: matte, or sheen.
Matte pomades produce less shine, and are good for people whose hair becomes overly greasy or shiny when applying pomade.
Sheen pomades, you guessed it, give your hair more shine! This can be good for people with dry hair.
When applying pomade to your hair, you don’t want it to be too dry or too wet. If your hair is too dry, the pomade will have trouble bonding to your hair, and you can end up with bits of it stuck in your hair. Not a good look!
On the other end of the spectrum, if your hair is too wet, then the oils in the pomade will slide right off! The best practice is to gently towel dry your hair, and apply when slightly damp.
