Meet Taylor

Taylor is a General Stylist at our Flagship salon, a “Taylor of all trade” according to his client Ilona. “What do you want done? Chic cut? Done.. best color, highlights, balayage? Done. Best blowout or hairstyle? He’s the one.. Taylor does it all, and with the best attitude and demeanor around. I send him to all my friends with pride.. the best.”

We asked him who his favorite curly celebrity was and how we can achieve locks like them.

Who is your favorite curly hair celebrity?
Emmy Rossun

How can you achieve curly hair like Emmy Rossun?
A cool diffusing technique will give you Emmy’s flawless curls. To avoid frizz in the summer, air dry your hair and use a curl cream, don’t brush your hair but gently control the curl using the Kerastase Creme De Jour Fondamental, nourishing and protective against frizziness.

How often should you cut it?
Everyone with curly hair is always scared to get a haircut. I always sit down for a consultation prior to the haircut so we can both feel comfortable with the right amount to cut or trim.

Asking the right questions to learn how the client styles her hair, natural dry or blow dry, what styling aids the client uses… all of these details can influence how much we need to cut.

A Summertime Curly Hair Care Guide, Salon Ziba

In general I recommend a trim every 2-3 months, and I highly recommend a treatment the day of the haircut. My favorite at the moment is the Kerastase Fusio Dose Forme. It is a Curl Specific treatment that replenishes curls and brings shine. It can be boosted with a customized secondary treatment for moisture or color protection.

Meet Freddy

Freddy is a Hair Stylist at our Flagship salon and has been with us for 30 years! But Don’t look for him on social media. Freddy is one of the best kept secrets, his clientele has been built on recommendation alone, a testament to how much his clients love him!

His unique process and amazing hair care tips are valued by all his clients as well as fellow staff. He gives “the best cuts ever” according to his client Bina. Check out his favorite curly celebrity below.

Who is your favorite curly hair celebrity?
Julia Garner, her natural curly look is amazing on her.

How can you achieve curly hair like Julia Garner?
For short hair like Julia Garner I would use a diffuser and a nourishing leave-in conditioner — something ultra nourishing, as it is important to keeping curls soft and shiny. I recommend the Kerastase Creme De Jour (everyone loves it and it is the latest for curly hair by the best hair care brand).

To finish the look, I would use Salon Ziba In-Control Gel, which is great for giving that perfect finish wet look for hot summer nights out.

How often should you shampoo and condition curly hair? And what would you recommend using?
Curly hair can often be a little greasy at the roots and dry at the ends. That lack of moisture at the ends makes the hair look frizzy.

A shampoo and conditioner created specifically for curly hair is the best way to go. Today most brands offer a great array of those.

Shampooing once a week is a good frequency for curly hair. If you see your roots getting a little greasy, get a dry shampoo to absorb the excess oils. My fav at the moment are Kerastase Bain Hydratation Douceur or the Oribe Moisture and control.

Instead of using a conditioner, a heavy mask can do wonders. Let it sit for a bit and rinse it well, using a little bit of cold water at the end. I recommend Oribe Moisture and Control mask, or the Kerastase Beurre Haute Nutrition Hair Mask.

Meet Melece

Melece is full-fledged artist at our 57 street Flagship salon and has been with us for over 24 years!

She has “Pure Mastery” according to her client Kandie. “I have traveled to NYC for over ten years to enjoy the city and have Melece cut and style my hair. Her abilities are extraordinary. She truly understands different hair qualities and what style works best for her clients. Melece consistently cuts my hair with such finesse that it accentuates my hair’s qualities, and I get so many compliments on my haircut.”

Who is your favorite curly hair celebrity?
Zendaya

How can you achieve curly hair like Zendaya?
For longer hair like Zendaya, i don’t like to use a diffuser since it causes frizziness. On freshly cleaned hair, I twist every lock with my fingers using a leave-in conditioner. Kerastase Creme Du Jour is great for curls, and I would let them air dry. Air drying is absolutely the best to achieve hair like Zendaya. When dry, you can gently separate the curls to give them some volume without creating frizziness.

How often should you shampoo and condition curly hair?
Ideally, you shouldn’t wash more than twice a week.

With new technology comes new shampoos and conditioners; shampoo that can make your hair look curlier or help smooth the curls out, or discipline them, if you are looking for a smooth blow out look.

And I would recommend a hair mask instead of a conditioner, something deeply nourishing and moisturizing.

What hair products do you recommend to use for curly hair?
The best hair care products for curly hair are those designed specifically for curly hair.

Curly hair most often needs moisture and nourishment; the new Kerastase Curl Manifesto line is fantastic for curly hair; the leave in Creme De Jour has become one of our best sellers in a few short months; and i love the Refresh Absolu Hair Spray by Kerastase — it is a the perfect spray to refresh, re-hydrate your curls on the second or third day after your shampoo.

Oribe Moisture and control has some fantastic styling products like the Curl Gelee for shine, super light gelee that will keep your curl together.

Aveda has a little secret product as well, The Curl Enhancer. It is fantastic if you want your curls to be bigger and bouncier.

How often should you cut it?
On a regular basis, every two months is a good routine. And I would suggest a good haircut before the summer months, to get rid of the dry ends that will make your curls look dry and frizzy during the hot summer days when we have the tendency to keep it natural and curly.
