No one does grunge hair better than Kristen Stewart. At Chanel’s spring 2023 show in Paris, she did it yet again. As she took her place in the front row, Stewart showed off a new and suitably punk mullet cut —think a grunge Princess Diana, as one particularly enamored Vogue staffer had put it.

Our own celebrity hair stylist, Francois Fortin, has this to say on Stewart’s new do: “While the mullet is, by all accounts, a divisive haircut, Stewart’s style really suits her face—plus, she has the attitude and confidence to pull it off.” Francois is no stranger to short haircuts. Born and raised in France, he has the French technique to back up his skills. We’re happy to say that this year, he celebrates 31 years with Salon Ziba!

Ask top hairdressers which styles suit which face shape and most will say that it doesn’t really matter, that it’s all about how you wear it. If the haircut is wearing you—and not the other way around—then you know it’s not the right choice for you.

Jojo Siaw made headlines in April, 2022, by chopping off her signature blond side ponytail in favor of a pixie cut. Since then, the star has shown how versatile a short haircut can be and how easy one can change its look by using bright color or accessories to create evening or red carpet looks.

Dragan Milunovic, one of the trendiest hair stylists on 57th street today, suggested that the transformation from long to short hair, like Jojo, is fun to do as it allows you to pause the process at different lengths, from a Lob haircut to a Mullet to the pixie, giving you time to adapt to shorter hair and have fun with the experience of going shorter. Dragan is wearing the male version of the mullet himself.

Dixie D’amelio’s new pixie cut (debuted at the 2022 BAZAAR Icons party) is sure to be one of the most-requested styles at salons as the year comes to a close. JD Restrepo has already seen a few of his clients adapting the same pixie short hair looks. One of his more popular clients went platinum blonde after the cut, opting for the younger look without any regret. JD says that at first, his client was “shocked and surprised” by the new look, but has now fully embraced it with new makeup and accessories.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence recently appeared in Vogue’s “73 Questions” series, and while Lawrence wasn’t personally a fan of the pixie cut when she wore it in 2013, she feels the style is a year-round staple for a reason. Also known as a pixie crop, the haircut is lauded for its versatility. Typically no more than three inches in length, it looks great on all face shapes. The pixie is a low-maintenance style that has an effortless “I-woke-up-like-this” feel.
